St. Raphael 1954 to 1964, was the first company from outside cycling to be the main sponsor of a French team. The official name for the team was Saint Raphael-Raphael Geminiani. Geminiani had just launched a bike brand of that name and claimed the team name referred to him. Many believe the bike brand was just a front as most of the money came from St. Raphael a brand of aperitif containing quinine. The tour directors at the time were opposed to big commercial firms involvement may threaten their control over the sport.
